Bin Linux Neuling und grad dabei mein Notebook mit Suse9.3 einzurichten.
Ich schaffs aber nicht den Internetzugang einzurichten. Habe erstmal Provider (ich nutze noch Modem) über YaST eingerichtet. Beim 1. Einwahlversuch kam “nicht in dialout-Gruppe bzw. smpppd nicht gestartet. Mittlerweile habe ich den smpppd über “rcsmpppd start” gestartet. Trotzdem bekomme ich die Meldung “smpppd nicht gestartet” und “Verschiedene Einstellungen” überprüfen. Was muß ich noch tun?

poste doch mal bitte die Ausgabe des folgenden Befehls:
grep ppp /var/log/localmessages | tail -n 20
In der Datei /var/log/messages sind die Meldungen zu finden, die der ppp produziert, wenn er die Online-Verbindung herstellt. Zwanzig Zeilen sollten reichen.

als root:
adduser ron dialout
danach ausloggen (der windowmanager muß neu gestartet werden) und damit ist das erste Problem gelöst. Was es mit dem smpppd auf sich hat, das weiß ich nicht, habe aber eine aufschlußreiche Seite dazu gefunden.

ich habe den Befehl als user und als root probiert (auch statt adduser -> add user).
Leider alles ohne Erfolg (“command not found”).
Auch wenn die Meldung “Nicht in der dialout-Gruppe…” kommt, sollte das nicht das
Problem sein, denn laut YaST bin ich als user in der Gruppe “dialout,disk,video,users,
modem,tty”. Oder täuscht mir YaST da eine Berechtigung vor?

Viel Kommandozeile hast du ja schon hinter dir!
Schau doch einmal im Runlevel-Editor ob der smpppd aktiviert ist. Den
Runlevel-Editor findest du unter YAST und dann System.
Wenn er deaktiviert ist (war bei mir früher auch der Fall) aktivieren und
bestätigen.
Wird denn dein Modem erkannt und angesprochen? Hat es schon mal einen Pips von
sich gegeben?
Ich hab anfangs versucht mit meiner ISA Fritzkart ins Internet zu kommen, die
wurde auch anstrein erkannt aber unter Linux hab ich Sie nie zum laufen
bekommen. Da bekam ich die selben Meldungen mit smmpppd und dailout wie du Sie
beschreibst.
Es ist auch nicht gesagt das der Modem mit den selben Einstellungen wie in
Windows unter Suse Linux 9.3 funktioniert.

Hallo Karl-Heinz,
im Runlevel-Editor hab ich nachgesehen. Laut dem Expertenmodus ist der Runlevel 2, 3 und 5 gestartet. Das der smpppd läuft (auch automatisch ab Start) habe ich schon mal über die Konsole (rcsmpppd status)bestätigt bekommen. Trotzdem kam auch heute wieder die Fehlermeldung “smpppd nicht gestartet bzw siehe
in versch. Einstellungen”.
Das Modem wurde zwar erkannt, ob allerdings auch das richtige erkannt wird, habe ich so meine Zweifel. Da ich Suse auf dem Notebook mit dem internen Modem nutze, muß dies sich wohl auch nicht akustisch melden,oder? Auf jeden Fall zeigt XP (auf einer 2.Partition des Notebooks installiert) eine andere Modembezeichnung.Könnte es daran liegen?
